Measuring Poverty Dynamics with Synthetic Panels Based on Repeated <scp>Cross Sections</scp>

چکیده
Panel data are rarely available for developing countries. Departing from traditional pseudo-panel methods that require multiple rounds of cross-sectional to study poverty mobility at the cohort level, we develop a procedure works with as few two survey and produces point estimates transitions along welfare distribution more disaggregated household level. Validation using Monte Carlo simulations real actual panel – several countries, spanning different income levels geographical regions perform well under various deviations model assumptions. The method could also inform investigation other outcome dynamics.

On measuring vulnerability to poverty
There is a growing interest on dynamic and broader concepts of deprivation such as vulnerability, which takes in to account the destitution of individuals from future shocks. We use the framework of decision making under uncertainty to arrive at a new measure of vulnerability to poverty. We highlight the importance of current standard of living to better capture the notion of vulnerability. In ...
متن کاملPanel Regression Models for Measuring Multidimensional Poverty Dynamics
This work is related to the studying of poverty dynamics and the analysis of the socio-demographic factors influencing it. We have chosen a fuzzy and multidimmensional approach in order to define two different poverty measures. A panel regression model has been estimated and particular attention has been paid to the treatment of the unobservable heterogeneity among longitudial units. The specif...

The Kyrgyz Republic has enjoyed remarkable success in poverty reduction in recent years. Poverty headcounts were halved between 2005 (63.9%) and 2008 (31.3%), before they slightly increased again to 33.7% (2010). However, these aggregate figures mask individual or household trajectories into and out of poverty. Additionally, the question arises as to who has remained poor for an extended durati...
متن کاملMeasuring lifetime poverty
This paper presents an axiomatic framework for measuring lifetime poverty over multiple periods. For an individual, we argue that lifetime poverty is influenced by both the “snapshot” poverty of each period and the poverty level of the “permanent” lifetime consumption; it is also influenced by how poverty spells are distributed over the lifetime. For a society, we consider a path-independence r...
متن کاملMeasuring Local Poverty Rates
A family with 20,000 dollars in annual earnings can obviously afford far more in Buffalo than in Boston, but economists have still hardly agreed on how to adjust local poverty measurements for local prices of living. A simple procedure might be to just use local price of living indices, but there are at least two reasons why such an adjustment could be highly problematic. First, these price adj...
